- It is a very exciting time for
all Kiwanians and a time of great opportunity. We have the distinction
of being the membership and leaders who will help take the best
volunteer organization in the world to new heights. A million
members by 2015 is our goal and we must "hit it hard"
now.
How can we attain that membership? You and I can help by asking
all our friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to join our
clubs. Do not be selfish - share with everyone the excitement
of helping to improve the lives of children and people, not only
in our own communities, but all over the world. Doesn't it feel
good to fund raise knowing those funds will be going to help
children all over the world? Is it not a good time and lots of
fun to meet with and work with our fellow members? What a good
time I have at my meetings and projects!! I even have a good
time getting up at 5 AM to serve pancakes.
New clubs are absolutely necessary. Right now, we have new club
builders working in the Peoria area, downtown Chicago, Springfield
area and the Collinsville area. I want to thank those builders;
Jim Rochford, Terry Cunefare, Jen Kelly, Richard Small and Jim
Pulley. We need for this elite group to become an "army."
If I call your name, please respond to our district and our Kiwanis
and join our "army" to build more clubs in the great
II. Better yet, can you volunteer and join the elite with helping
to build a new club. Where can you build a club? Will you step
up and help the children of the world by recruiting and building?
What are the effects of all this building and recruiting? SERVICE
IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RESULT OF MORE MEMBERS. More children can
be served with more membership. Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation,
our finest project, will have more dollars to continue all the
research grants that are awarded each year. BUG programs can
be started in more schools. More scholarships will be available
for more Key Club and Circle K members. How much more service
can we accomplish?
The "bottom line" will improve as well. More members
translate to better funding for the district. Perhaps, in the
future, other governors will enjoy the luxury of not having to
make cuts in their budgets as we had to this year. Perhaps, once
again the district will fund all the scholarships coming from
the International Foundation, which we cannot do this year. However,
that being said, I believe the most important thing about a greater
membership number is the service we render.
The Chicago Project is moving very well. Under the International
leadership of Don Canaday and Earl Forbes, we are ready to start
building the recruiting teams. Mary Meike, Clay Gervais and Cliff
Canaday will be team leaders. Larry Spone has been the meeting
facilitator from the beginning of the project. The schools, with
the blessing of the superintendent, are awaiting such programs
as BUG and Terrific Kids. In time, we will build 30 clubs in
the Chicago area - hopefully three of those in the next few weeks.
In closing, I really want to have you join me in Orlando in June
for the International Convention. What a great destination to
bring the whole family. Our district dinner will be at Sea World
and of course, we all know where Mickey lives.
Until the next time we talk...........
