- One of the best ways to increase membership
is by inviting a "friend" to participate in a service
project. Once you get their "hands" involved, their
"hearts" will appreciate the friendliness and dedication
of the club members. This first-hand experience makes it a lot
easier to them involve their "heads" and opens them
to accepting an invitation to learn more about becoming a member.

- At the November 2007 Past Lt. Governor's
Convention, current Division 20 Lt. Governor Deb Rochford shared
the following service ideas. Try one (or two) of them out. They're
great!
-
- "Best Little
Service Projects Around"
- KIWANIS DAY OF SERVICE: In April of each
year all of Kiwanis participates in a service project in each
of their respective areas and the goal is to have 1,000,000 hours
of service on that day.
-
-
- ADOPT A HIGHWAY: Set up through the State
of Illinois/Iowa Department of Transportation. A designated stretch
of highway is the responsibility of your club to keep it garbage
free. Great project to involve your key club to help. Only take
a hand full of people a few hours.
- JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION:
They have a $25.00 bear that can be purchased to donate to a
child with diabetes. The doctor uses the bear to demonstrate
where and how shots are given. Helps alleviate the stress of
receiving the shots. They get to take the bear home with them.
-
- KIDS IN KARS: For a small fee can get
literature on kids left in cars and the dangers it presents.
Can utilize these at pre-schools, fee days, school newsletters,
etc. We help make people aware of the dangers of leaving a child
in a car for any length time no matter what the temperature is
outside.
-
- OPERATION SANTA: Stockings that are sent
to our troops over seas at Christmas time. Have club members
collect their unused containers of shampoo, hand lotion, etc
from our stays at hotels (LIKE THE PERE MARQUETTE) and donate
them for stocking stuffers. Many areas have this already in place
and all you need to do is donate.
-
- SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL POLICE AND FIREMAN:
Have a day of recognition for local men and women who put their
lives on the line for us each and every day. Can be coordinated
with your local police and fire stations to recognize their outstanding
leaders each and every year. Can be a yearly event. All you have
to do is pay for their lunch.
-
- SCHOOL SUPPLIES: At the end of the year
get local grade schools to participate. On their last few days
of school provide classrooms with boxes for students to put in
school supplies that they no longer need or want. The unwanted
school supplies become the only school supplies that students
in areas like Viet Nam will have to use in their schools. CHILDREN
OF PEACE out of Colorado will accept these donations. All you
need to do is box them up and ship them to Colorado.
-
- READING TO CHILDREN: Many libraries, pre-schools
or schools look for volunteers to read to children. Expand it
by purchasing books that after you read to them, they get to
take the book home with them.
-
- FLAGS IN YOUR COMMUNITY: Get businesses
in your area to purchase a flag to be flown in front of their
business on important patriotic holidays throughout the year.
The Kiwanis Club puts the flags up and down on each holiday as
well as stores them. The cost in the flag and the flag holder
comes from the local business.
-
- HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: All you need to
do is have members volunteer their time and talent in help building
a home for a family of need. Just organize with your local Habitat
for Humanity Chapter and gather the volunteers.
-
- KIWANIS KARRY OUT: Pair up with Key Clubbers
or local Cub Scouts to help carry groceries out to the customer's
cars for your local supermarket. Set it up with your local supermarket.
Tips go to help pay for our many causes we support, as well as
the Key Clubs or Cub Scouts.
-
- CLEAN UP FOR SENIORS: Do fall and spring
clean up for the elderly citizens or handicapp in your neighborhoods.
All it takes is muscles to rake leaves, clean gutters, trim bushes,
etc. Doesn't cost any money and get your Key Club and Builders
Club members to help out.
-
- COLLECT BABY SUPPLIES: Each month pick
a new baby supply that your club collects for that month at each
of your meetings. Donate them to local organizations that help
out unwed mothers, homeless families, familes with abusive parents
in helping ease the burden of the cost of baby supplies.
-
- BABY FOOD CONTEST: Pick a month where
you collect baby food. Donate to your local pantry. Make it a
contest. Divide into teams....losing team gets fed a jar of baby
food (Vegetables not fruit!!!!)
-
- PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION: During the holidays
you organize picking up the elderly or handicapped to view the
holiday displays in your area. Those who are homebound never
get to see the festive lights at Christmas. Only takes the gas
you use to drive them around. Can even look into having your
local bus company donate a bus to use on a specific night.
-
- KIWANIS DOLLS: Purchase material and cut,
sew and stuff the dolls. Donate the dolls to your local hospitals
or send them to CHILDREN OF PEACE to take to Viet Nam. Can utilize
your Key Club or Builders Club members to help with the stuffing.
Patterns can be gotten through Kiwanis International.
-
- PROVIDE A SUBSCRIPTION OF KIWANIS MAGAZINE:
To your local library!
-
- SPONSOR A COMMUNITY WIDE READING DAY:
Everyone spends the same hour of the same day reading or listening
to someone read.
-
- SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS:
Helping other clubs (or other organizations) in your division
or communities with their service projects only increases the
service we do. If you have the set up to cook chops....cook pancakes....offer
other clubs your equipment ....or better yet...provide the equipment
and the volunteers. This is especially important to the new clubs
in your area. Also support their fund raisers. Go to their pancake
breakfasts and then invite them to your fundraisers and projects.
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN
OUR COMMUNITIES.
